What to Expect at JoySpring
Our Staff
Our knowledgeable office assistant organizes many aspects of your care including booking appointments, scheduling ultrasounds, and arranging referrals. Rather than phoning your midwife for non-urgent matters or questions, clients are encouraged to contact the office via email, which will be answered within two business days.
Our Office
We are pleased to provide a welcoming and peaceful office environment and we strive to keep our office wait times minimal. We do appreciate your patience should our appointments be running late due to unforeseen circumstances. When you are scheduling your next appointment, please contact us by phone or email about two weeks before the date you will be requesting, which enables us to accommodate a time convenient for you and your midwife.
Your Midwife
Meet your midwife. Your midwife will be available to you by phone 24/7 for urgent matters.
First Visit
The first prenatal visit usually takes place between 8-12 weeks gestation. At this visit, your midwife will answer questions you have, start a record of your care, and begin discussing the choice of birth setting. You will be informed about a variety of standard pregnancy investigations and these will be arranged unless you decline. Please allow approximately 45-60 minutes for this appointment.
Other Appointments
Your subsequent appointments will allow time for addressing your questions or concerns, assessing your blood pressure, measuring baby's growth, and listening to baby's heart rate. These visits take about 30 minutes and follow this schedule:
- Once a month until 30 weeks gestation;
- Every 2 weeks until 36 weeks;
- One visit each week until the baby is born
Labour and Birth
Your midwife will have many discussions with you about labour, birth, and about when to call her to come. During active labour until baby is born, the midwife supports her client continuously and monitors the well-being of mother and baby. A second healthcare professional will attend nearer the time of delivery. Midwives are able to deliver in both out-of-hospital and in-hospital settings.
Postpartum Care
Your midwife will care for you and your baby until six weeks after you have given birth. In the first week, your midwife will visit you at home; thereafter, your appointments will take place in the clinic, typically at 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Care during the postpartum period is very thorough and you will receive breastfeeding help as well as assessments on your health and baby's. At six weeks, you will be discharged to your family physician for ongoing care as the need arises, or our office can facilitate a referral to a pediatrician.
