Laura’s decision to become a midwife originated in an unexpected place! While working as a dental assistant in Edmonton, she saw firsthand the importance of providing individualized care to families and the value of enabling them to make informed decisions about their own health. Laura began searching out options for a career in dentistry, but came across the midwifery program at Mount Royal University instead. Laura knew she had found her calling and she has never looked back! Her midwifery education has taken her across the prairies from Manitoba, to Saskatchewan, and back to her home province of Alberta.
Laura’s philosophy is that birth is a healthy and normal process and she strives to create a space where families can receive attentive, individualized and holistic care to make the best decisions for themselves and their baby. Laura spent the fourth year of her midwifery program as part of the JoySpring team and felt like she was at home. The women and families she served in the practice taught her valuable lessons about motherhood, femininity, and faith, and became important examples for Laura, just as much as her teachers and mentors have been.
Laura lives in Edmonton with her husband Mark, and their two bulldogs Turbo and Dodge. She hopes to one day live outside the city on a homestead with a few chickens (and babies, too)! If you don’t see her in the office, you might find her shopping at the local thrift store, identifying medicinal uses of the plants that grow around her, or snapping some great candid photos!
